Alkaline earths: Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra
Group 2 (IIA) on the periodic table are termed the Alkaline Earth metals. Several of these elements occur in soil causing the soil to be alkaline. This is especially true of calcium, which occurs very frequently in soils as calcium carbonate or limestone. This is an important raw material used to produce many basic materials. These elements commonly form +2 charged ions with low solubility.
