The transition metal elements includes atoms that have multiple oxidation states. As a result, a number of different colored compounds often are observed that depend upon the oxidation state of the metal.

Locate safe examples of such compounds in the stock room, and let students examine them. You also can demonstrate the colors with solutions on an overhead [local].

One example that is easily demonstrated shows six oxidation states of manganese,
