Molecular orbital theory

The mixing of atomic orbitals is imagined to produce hybrid orbitals in a process termed hybridization. The most important notion of hybridization may well be that the orientation or geometry of the orbitals is set by the type of hybridization.

Hybrid orbitals can be classified by the types of atomic orbitals used in their formation and have predictable 3-dimensional shapes and geometries.
