HISTORICAL

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning poses a potential threat to many people. CO gas is colorless and odorless. It is the chemical product of the incomplete combustion of carbon based fuel.

Carbon monoxide has very large affinity for hemoglobin (200-300 times that of O2). Heme groups prefer CO over O2 and bind it very tightly. This prevents any binding of O2. CO poisoning is especially harmful to children.
