Functional groups containing nitrogen [local]

Naming: Amines are named with the names of the attached alkyl groups followed by the word amine (pronounced "a" "mean").

(CH3)2CH3CH2N dimethyl ethyl amine  
CH3CH(CH3NH)(CH2)3CH3 2-N-methylaminohexane  

Amines can be thought of as derivative of ammonia. In a primary amine (1° amine), one hydrogen is replaced with an alkyl group. In a secondary amine (2° amine), two hydrogens are replaced with alkyl groups. In a tertiary amine (3° amine), all three hydrogens are replaced with alkyl groups.






Reactions of Amines:

Amines react with carbonyl compounds (ketones, aldehydes) to form C=N compounds:






Amines react with carboxylic acids to form amides:
