Geometric isomers (also known as cis-trans isomers) exist when there is restriction in rotation about a bond/bonds between 2C atoms, and each of the two C atoms involved in the bond/bonds with the restricted rotation is attached to 2 different atoms or groups.

Examples:

 

cis-1,2-dichlorocyclopentane       trans-1,2-dichlorocyclopentane
