There are thousands of reasonably well described organic reactions. Chemists use reactions to synthesize substances and to transform one substance into another.
Many issues surround reactions. When making a gasoline additive, costs usually must be kept very low. When making a drug, on the other hand, costs can be extremely high. For drugs, however, purification of the final product must be assured. Having difficulty to remove byproducts as contaminants presents a serious problem.
We introduced the notion of reactions above when considering functional groups. We included reactions leading to the formation of each group, as well as some reactions of the groups themselves.
Three classifications of reactions are additions, substitutions, and eliminations; there are others.
