The term intermediate implies a molecular substance that is formed on the path between reactants and products.

When used in connection with reaction mechanisms, this implies something that is more stable than a transition state, but which might be too unstable to isolate and store.

When used in connection with organic synthesis, the term may apply to isolatable substances. Indeed, many such intermediates can be purchased to used as starting materials during a synthesis.
