General Reaction Mechanisms

Cations, anions, and radicals represent three key entities used to rationalize organic mechanisms.

Formula (example) Electrons Name   Hybridization
6 cation carbocation sp2
7 radical   sp3
8 anion carbanion sp3

Groups connected to the central atom that donate electrons (or delocalize charge) increase carbocation stability.

A metal cation may stabilize a negative charge at a carbon atom (carbanion).
