The active ingredigent in aspirin is:

acetylsalicylic acid.

While acetylsalicylic acid is an effective analgesic, anti-inflammatory agent and anti-pyretic, its acidic properties cause stomach irritation for many people. Consequently, aspirin is ‘packaged’ with other chemicals in the tablet to lessen the acidic problem. Determine the difference between aspirin, buffered aspirin, and enteric coated aspirin by 'simulating your stomach' [local].
