MISCONCEPTIONS

Using organic compounds, especially organic solvents [local], requires an understanding of toxicity and the 'least toxic approach' [local]. That fact that the human body is composed of many compounds similar and identical to those compounds used in the organic chemistry laboratory implies a hazard. Compounds from both origins can serve as solvents for each other which facilitates transfer of materials. While nature also provides many compounds toxic to humans, the organic chemistry laboratory increases exposure to potential toxins.

For these reasons, the highest degree of safety should be observed in an organic laboratory. This includes goggles, laboratory aprons and protective gloves. Finally, students should also be reminded to wash their hands upon leaving the laboratory.
