Gas Law Units

Accepted values of physical constants are published by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology; see molar gas constant).

The value of the ideal gas constant varies depending upon the units of the gas variables. 8.314 m3*Pa/mol*K is the SI form of the constant. 0.08206 L*atm/mol*K is commonly used by high school chemistry teachers and students. Common practice is to have students memorize one value and the proper units. All of the gas variable units are then converted to match the memorized values of R.

Values for the gas constant R
