How do air bags work? [local]

There is no good way to store a compressed gas in an automobile, and then quickly use this gas to fill an air bag. The gas for the airbag needs to be generated by the chemical reaction of a solid mixture. One mixture for gas bags involves sodium azide. Azides, however, are very toxic, and the air bags present a significant disposal and handling problem.
