The sun's rays heat the earth. The earth radiates. When the energy balance is shifted, there is a chance for temperature change. The atmosphere includes gases that can capture the radiation from the earth and reradiate it back -- leading to a net temperature increase. (Actually, the effects are really more complex than this.)

The net effect is that the atmosphere behaves something like a greenhouse [local] and hence that name.
