lightstick Chemical light sticks emit visible light when they are initiated. Initiation usually implies sufficiently bending the stick to break an ampoule contained within the hollow stick. Once the ampoule is broken, two or more chemicals are allowed to mix and a luminescent product is formed.

Light sticks offer an excellent means for relating the temperature of a chemical reaction to its rate (DoChem 113).
