For much of this course, the word 'cloning' has been used to mean the propagation of a DNA sequence that represents a gene. The cloned DNA could be propagated in the same organism, or in a different organism. However, 'cloning' is also used to mean the propagation of a new organism from a single cell (or just the nucleus) of a parent organism. The clone is produced asexually and is genetically identical to the parent. There has been a lot of interest in cloning of mammals sparked by Dolly the sheep.
