Acid-base theory

ChemSource summarizes the basic ideas embodied in any study of acids and bases.

Acidity often is discussed in terms of how a substance behaves in water. But what kind of substance, when mixed with water, will behave as an acid? Four factors [local] that control the relative strength of an acid or base are enumerated:

  1. Bond polarity between X and hydrogen.
  2. The size of the atom X
  3. The charge of an acid or a base.
  4. The oxidation state of the central atom.
Why is it that NaOH is basic and HOCl is acidic? Both seem to have oxygen bonded to hydrogen [local].

Stephen K. Lower (retired from Simon Fraser University BC V5A 156 Canada) has produced many useful pdf documents that you may want to download. One concerns acids and bases. Lower's documents may be thought of as references to be used throughout your perusal of the acid-base topics that follow. Unless listed neither of these two documents have been used in formulating questions that you will be asked to know about.
