Acid indigestion (heartburn) is a common malady often treated by taking antacids. Antacids are taken to reduce the acidity of the stomach. Antacids used to neutralize excess HCl also affect pepsin digestion of polypeptides in the stomach. Antacids may be clearly indicated as therapy to counteract excess HCl for patients with ulcers [local]. Excess acidity can also be treated with medication intended to slow the secretion of HCl itself. See table [local] for a list of antacids.
