Oxides [local] of metals and nonmetals are mixed with water and pH indicators to illustrate the corresponding acidic and basic properties. Non metal oxides react with the solvent water to produce an acid solution as is shown by the indicator color. Metal oxides react with water to produce a basic solution as is evidenced by indicator color changes.
In general, oxides of elements on the left side of the periodic table produce basic solutions when mixed with water, while oxides of elements on the right side of the periodic table produce acidic mixtures. Oxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals produce basic solutions in combination with water. Oxides of halogens and chalcogens (group 16 and 17) produce acidic solutions.
