Before the demonstration obtain three transparent glasses or 250-mL beakers. Into one glass add 1 level teaspoon of Na2CO3, into a second glass add 3-4 drops of phenolphthalein, and into the third glass 4 level teaspoons of NaHSO4. Into each glass add a small amount of water to make a solution. Obtain a non transparent pitcher and fill it with water. Surround the pitcher with 3 clear glasses.
To carry out the demonstration add water from the pitcher into each glass. It will look like water. Pour the contents of the glass containing Na2CO3 and the glass containing phenolphthalein back into the pitcher and stir the solution. Refill each emptied glass and you have wine colored solution. Pour the contents of all three glasses back into the pitcher and stir. Refill each glass from the pitcher and it will appear clear and colorless. Make the claim that you turned water into wine and the wine back to water.
