Grain elevator explosions are a real threat in many midwestern farming communities. This problem as a phenomenon is a function of the particle size of small hydrocarbon particles dispersed in the air. These particles are produced during the transfer of grain from transportation trucks to an elevator. Many safety precautions are used at the elevators to limit and remove the dust produced in moving grain. The kinetics of this reaction provide a very fast reaction rate that provides explosive power. Many chemistry teachers simulate the problem for demonstration purposes with baker's flour or lycopodium powder
