About half the Zn produced is used to protect iron products. The process is called galvanizing.

Zn forms a stable coating of basic carbonate, Zn2(OH)2CO3, which protects the metal from further corrosion including oxidation by air.

Zn forms an electolytic cell with any open spots of iron. Zn oxidizes and reduces any Fe that corrodes (oxidizes).
