In principle, ANY spontaneous chemical reaction can be conducted so that the energy is released as electric energy in a cell. This is a MUCH more efficient way to capture the maximum amount of energy available for use as work. (Not all energy may be available as work. Any heat released must be used with a heat engine, an intrinsically inefficient device. See Chemical Thermodynamics course.)
