Chlorine is one of the most widely produced chemicals in the United States. Much chlorine is produced by the chlor-alkali process, an electrochemical process. This process once used mercury, but environmental problems with mercury releases caused a membrane process to be developed.

Recent attempts have been made to capture and recycle some chlorine.
