Provide students with materials, and have them discover ways to create a battery. All you really need to provide is a variety of metals (copper, magnesium, aluminum, iron, zinc, etc.), a lemon or lime, and a voltmeter.
Have students determine the largest voltage they can obtain using these materials.
Try to use one of these batteries to "power up" a low power device.
