Precipitation titration [local] is a quantitative volumetric technique. An example would be titration of a chloride sample with a silver nitrate solution of known concentration.
How is the end point detected in such a titration ?
The Ksp of Ag2CrO4 is 1.12 x 10-12 and the The Ksp of AgCl is 1.76 x 10-10. Silver chromate is more soluble than the silver chloride. This means that AgCl will form a precipitate before Ag2CrO4 does. If AgNO3 is added to a beaker containing both CrO42- and Cl-, the Cl- will form a precipitate first. When Cl- ion has been sufficiently removed from solution, then Ag2CrO4 will precipitate.
Silver chloride is white; silver chromate is orange. The appearance of the orange precipitate signals the titration's end point.
