Practical applications of thermodynamics are ubiquitous. In our industrialized society, fossil fuels supply most of the energy requirements from automobile engines to our furnaces and many of our electrical power plants. Most of the work in our society is done by machines dependent on energy supplied by chemical reactions. Thermodynamic laws help us use energy more efficiently.
