Contamination is a potential problem in all analytical chemistry laboratories. In forensics laboratories, where qualitative rather than quantitative tests often are performed, false positives might be possible. For example, if a sample of DNA were obtained from a suspect, and laboratory procedures were such that a portion of this sample became mixed with one from a crime scene, then a false positive identification could occur.
