"Art conservation or restoration involves any attempt to repair and preserve works of sculpture, painting, drawing, architecture, and the decorative arts (furniture, glassware, metalwork, textiles, ceramics, and so on) from the effects of negligence, willful damage, or, more usually, inevitable decay caused by the effects of time and human use on the materials of which they are made.

Techniques include:

Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis

Infrared Spectroscopy

X-Ray Energy Spectrometry.
