Food irradiation involves sealing perishable foods to prevent access by microorganisms, and then irradiating the sealed package to kill most existing microorganisms. Irradiation prevents much deterioration of foods due to microorganisms. It does not kill all organisms, nor does it prevent deterioration due to chemical reactions.
