Everyday radioactive items (fiesta ware, etc.)

Geiger counters [local] are devices that use a Geiger-Mueller tube [local] to detect and measure ionizing radiation, as emitted by radioactive sources. They make for very interesting chemical demonstrations especially when they are used on common household items [local]. Radioactive shielding is a great demonstration (or experiment) with a geiger counter.
