A21 Chlorine Displacement of Halide Salts
Description
Chlorine passes through a tube which contains moist potassium bromide at one point and potassium iodide further down the tube. Bromine and Iodine are clearly present in the tube after reaction. Some yellow crystals also form.
Equation
Cl2 + 2 KBr --> Br2 + 2 KCl
Br2 + 2 KI --> I2 + 2 KBr
I2 + 3 Cl2 --> I2Cl6 (yellow crystals)
